IS COVID-19 A TERRIBLE TRAGEDY OR COULD IT BE MORE THAN THAT? By Alejandra Chacón Gallardo

The pandemic has been a disruptive event that has modified profoundly our way life.  People from every corner of the world have been affected by this illness, and it seems that more than one element of our old life has changed forever.

From the freedom to go everywhere, to the way of studying or working, and ending with the way to interact each other, the pandemic sent us to a very different world: more intimate, more responsible, more real.

Last year in a short period of time, we had to leave our way of life to be save.  For me, it was like discovering new angles of my life. I found new ways to be at home, I found new ways to interact with my family, and I found new ways of thinking my personal live project.  I had to be more proactive, more resilient, more creative.

I confirmed that I need just few things to be happy, and that be part of social activism gives me a kind of positive perspective.  Moreover, I observed that the world has been denying the most relevant issues we have to face in this century, I observed that I used to dedicate too much time to irrelevant things, I observed that I do not want to live in that way anymore.

COVID-19 has taken many things from us: people that we loved, our health, our freedom, or even our stability; but, you know? COVID-19 could be more than that.

The pandemic made us to understand that destroying our environment affects the stability of all spices in the planet, including the human survival; climate change is not a romantic topic, but a priority to save our planet; pandemic made us to understand that global warming is our single greatest subject for the century.

The pandemic has allowed us to see more that clear our differences, and urges us to recognize their value; vaccines have been created in a global laboratory where scientists from all the globe sheared information as never before, so they are giving to the planet the opportunity to find a possible solution against COVID19 because they made an incredible cross country job.

Additionally, the seriousness of the pandemic in vulnerable communities and the risk that it represents for all the nations of the world is the probe that equity is critically important to avoid this crisis and any other pandemic. Science has demonstrated that the only way to succeed COVID-19, next pandemics and global warming is protecting our environment, and creating more equal and sustainable communities.

In sum, we arrived to January 2020, with a world on hazard, with an incredible global inequity, and with incredible levels of anxiety and depression, and the pandemic has shown us that our previous way of life is not sustainable any more: the pandemic has shown that we have to change.
So, may be, COVID-19 is not a just a terrible illness; maybe we could transform COVID-19 in an opportunity to rethink our way of living, to rebuild our way to interact each other, and to rebuild our way to interact with the environment.  May be COVID-19 is the opportunity to save our planet.
